Fish and marine oils are excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, special kind of polyunsaturated fatty acids that protect the cardiovascular system. Fish oils are specifically rich in types of omega-3 fatty acids known as EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Note that fish is not the only source of omega-3 fatty acids. They are also found in flaxseed oil and other vegetable oils. But our body has to convert the omega-3s in those foods to the heart-healthy EPA and DHA contained in fish and fish oils.
